City and Guilds Certificate in Gardening

EAST DEVON COLLEGE - Tiverton - Thursday 7 - 9 pm

New session starting September 2008

 

You are required to pass successfully 5 modules to achieve the Certificate in Gardening.  The modules will make you a knowledgeable and competent gardener as all technical areas are covered.

The certificate is gained by attending on Thursday evenings for 2 hours over 2 years.

Your learning will be supported by handout, demonstrations, and practicals. 

For most modules there will be a visit to a garden of interest that supports the module, i.e. R.H.S. Rosemoor, Torrington, NT Knightshayes, Tiverton

There are set books that are required for each of the modules. 

 

Academic Year 2008-9:

o    Garden Design

o     Growing Fruit

o    Organic Gardening

 

Academic Year 2009-10:

o    Trees, Shrubs & Roses

o    Plant Propagation

o    Beds and Borders

Leisure Gardening Courses Sept 2008 – June 2009
 

These one day modules are for interest and inspire the gardener suitable for those who are new to gardening or wanting to develop their skills.  They will look at theory and practical skills for gardening at the right time of year.

Each module looks at a range of tasks and activities so you can enrol for one or all of them.

Unit 1 - Lawn Care and Maintenance

 

 

 

 An introduction to the subject of lawn management and how to establish and maintain a lawn Identification and control of pest and diseases of the lawn will also be discussed.

 Some of the topics discussed in this module include sowing summer bedding plants, planning for Summer vegetable production, later winter pruning and an introduction to how to garden organically.

Unit 3 - The Spring Garden

 

 

 Some of the topics discussed in this module include Early Summer pruning, care and management of Spring Bulbs and organic pest and disease control.

 

Saturday 9th May 2009

10.00 – 3.30pm

Unit 4 - The Summer Garden

 

 Some of the topics discussed in this module include plants for the Summer borders, dry gardens, planning and sowing for winter vegetable production and sowing Autumn and Winter bedding plants.

 

Saturday 20th June 2009

10.00 – 3.30pm

Unit 5 - The Summer Garden

 Some of the topics discussed in this module include plants for autumn and winter interest, the care of soft fruit bushes, summer pruning of fruit dwarf fruit trees and care and management of hedges.
